The Khajuraho group of temples are known for the sculptures which adorn the walls of the shrines. Life seems to be frozen in the figures carved at the temple walls. Khajuraho group of temples exhibit the unique Nagara style of architecture. There are almost 85 temples at Khajuraho, which can be divided into the Eastern and Western group of temples. The Kandariya Mahadev temple is the largest of the group. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the walls of the temple exhibit lovemaking couples, mythological characters, and celestial maidens. The temple is large, with a height of 31 metres.

The Chausath Yogini temple, dedicated to Kali, is one of the oldest temples of the series. This is the only granite temple of the Khajuraho group of temples and is still intact, though built in the 900 AD. The Chitragupta temple is dedicated to the Sun God and faces east so that the first rays of the Sun fall on the temple. The five feet high deity of Sun god is seen on a chariot here. The Vishwanatha temple is another masterpiece of the group. While the northern steps of the entrance of this temple are ornated with stone carvings, the southern gateway of the temple is adorned with stone sculptures of elephants. This temple is dedicated to Lord Brahma; here the deity is a three-headed image.

The Lakshmana temple is unique of its kind among the group, as it is a Vaishnava temple. The temple is dedicated to three Lords of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar along with goddess Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Vishnu. The Mantageshwara temple is another Lord Shiva temple, known for the 8 feet high Shiva lingam.  The Khajuraho group of temples preaches the principle of unity among diversity as it also consists of Jain temples.

The Eastern group of temples is generally Jain temples, with the Parsvanatha temple. Along with exquisite stone carvings, this temple houses a throne facing a bull emblem, which represents the first Tirthankara, Adinath. The Ghantai temple of the Jain group of temples is a pretty temple where the frescoes represent the dreams of the mother of Lord Mahavira, at the time of his birth. This shrine also consists of a sculpture of Jain goddess, mounted on a Garuda.
