Charles Bridge Prague falls on the Royal route and is about 13 meters high,516 meters long, 9.5 meters wide and stands upon 15 pillars. Standing over the Vltava river, the Charles Bridge is the second oldest bridge as of today in Czech Republic. Charles IV initiated the construction of the bridge in 1357 and it took until 1402 to complete it. The bridge is constructed using sandstone blocks and its construction story is surrounded by many legends.

Attractions of Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge spans the Vltava river and is completely decorated with lamps and statues. The gothic bridge towers on both ends catches every tourist’s eye. There are magnificent statues on the bridge mounted in two rows. The most famous and prominent statue is that of St. John of Nepomuk. As it immortalizes the memory of St. John of Nepomuk, this statue is of great religious significance.

The next most artistically important statue is of Saint Vincent Ferrer and Procopius. The statue was made by the sculptor Ferdinand Brokoff in 1712. A prominent sculpture of Bohemian Knight Bruncvik with a lion and golden sword at his feet  stands right behind the statue of Saint Vincent. There is another sculpture which is very artistic and that is of St. Lutgarde. It was created in 1710 by Matthias Braun and became one of the most popular among baroque style sculptors. There are several other sculptures that are beautifully carved on the bridge.

Location, Opening Hours and Entrance Fees

Charles Bridge is strategically located and can be easily approached from the side of the river. You can reach the bridge by walking through the Mostecka street. You can also either walk from the Prague castle or get there by a tram.

There is no such as open or close hours and tourists can visit the Charles Bridge at any point of time in the day.


Charles Bridge has no entrance fee and time spent on the Charles Bridge is completely free. There are several restaurants nearby where tourists can go to after spending some time on the Charles Bridge.
